Some recent plein air paintings

Here are some recent paintings I've done over the last month or so. I'm still struggling with the watercolor paint. I don't think I'm quite familiar enough with using these colors.

Side note: the scanner picks the color up a bit differently than what the actual color is.

Just for Fun!

Here are some caricatures I did just for fun and practice. Don't ask who these people are because I don't know. I just flipped through my high school yearbook and found faces.

Personality Walk

This was a personality walk that was more of a caricature of one of my professors. It made quite a stir at school, so I think I nailed it.

On the bus

Today a very interesting thing happened. As usual, I had my sketchbook out and was drawing. An Indian lady sitting next to me asked to see it, so I let her. People will ask to see my sketchbook a lot of times. Mostly, it will be as I'm taking it out and about to draw in it. Next comes the couple minutes of, "wow," or "that's nice" while I'm sitting there with the pen in my hand waiting. Well, all this happened as usual, but at the end she asked if I could draw a picture of her. She wanted me to draw her a picture in my sketchbook and tear it out for her to keep. I laughed inside.
I wasn't going to give her a piece of my sketchbook, but one of her friends pulled out a folded up piece of scratch paper. I ended up drawing a portrait of her on a piece of scratch paper on the bumpy bus ride, while my sketchbook was passed around among five of her friends to look at.
I usually don't do this. Normally, I would charge people money for drawing them something, but this time was different. Some people may disagree with me, but I think some times it's good to do stuff for people just to be nice. I believe we have talents and abilities that we should use to make a living and provide for ourselves, but I also think we should use them to bless other people. This girl was definitely blessed. She told me she was going to frame the picture and hang it up on her wall. They always say that. It was a small thing for me to do. I was going to be drawing anyways. But I think it made her day, and it is something that will be with her for a long time. I will probably never see it again, but I'm sure she will remember it.
To me, that is something really special that not a lot of people will be able to experience. It is really important to protect yourself and your art and to provide for yourself with it, but you should also use it to bless others.

Plein air at the Lake

I was supposed to go to Del Valle park today for painting, but those plans fell through. So, instead I returned to Lake Chabot once again for some sketching and painting. Here is the plein air I did.

It's a little wrinkly.

Here's a fun little digital painting I did tonight.

Mechanical Pencil Tests

Here are the latest pencil tests that I've worked on this semester. Even though I've done them before, there still is a lot for me to learn in them. Now on to more creative things...

3.23.11

Anne.
Pretty girls are kinda hard. I need to get better at caricaturing beautiful people. It seems to be the most challenging thing to do.

3.14.11

I haven't posted in a while, and I admit that I haven't kept up with the commitment of a caricature a day. Once every other day is more realistic, honestly. Here is today's caricature of Bruce Lee.

2.12.11 and 2.13.11

I just watched the McLaughlin group tonight. There are such great characters on this show, I had to do a caricature. I'm definitely start doing them from videos instead of pictures- they're too flat and don't show the geography and volumes of the face.

2.11.11

If you have any suggestions of people I should draw, just leave a comment or email me.

2.10.11

Not the greatest, but it was worth the practice. It seems like it takes at least two caricatures for me to get warmed up and do something creative.

This one was a lot better. I changed the view to 3/4 to give a better sense of the dimensions of the face, especially the jaw. Working from pictures isn't the greatest for caricature art.

Caricature of the Day 2.9.11

I recently purchased a tablet for my computer. It makes digital art so fast and efficient. Here is the first of a series I've decided to do. I want to practice my caricature art more, so I decided to do one a day. If you have any suggestions of people I should draw, just leave a comment or email me.

Late at the Airport

I know I haven't posted anything in a while... things have been pretty busy. Here's the latest pencil test I've worked on.
